Temple University maintains a distinguished tradition of educating the nation’s finest risk, insurance and actuarial science professionals. With over 700 students and 21 full-time faculty, the Fox School’s Department of Risk, Insurance and Healthcare Management (RIHM) is the largest of its kind in the world. Ranked 2nd in the nation for research by the Journal of Risk and Insurance and 6th in the nation for the undergraduate business specialties by U.S. News & World Report (2016), the department offers both undergraduate (BBA) and graduate (MS, MBA and PhD) degrees in each of the three program areas: Risk Management and Insurance, Actuarial Science, and Healthcare Management. Our PhD program in risk management and insurance is one of the largest of its kind in the world.
Our Department also boasts a nearly 90% placement rate of our graduating seniors in risk management and actuarial science. Temple’s Sigma Chapter has won the prestigious Edison L. Bowers Award, presented annually by to Grand Chapter, 18 times in the last 24 years.
Our faculty are committed teachers and scholars, recognized both nationally and internationally for curriculum development and research excellence. Today’s global economy requires executive decision makers able to manage the total risk of a firm in a multinational setting. The Fox School’s Department of Risk, Insurance and Healthcare Management prepares students for this challenge.
Members of our faculty are nationally and internationally known experts in the areas of risk management, employee benefits, property liability insurance, health care and actuarial science. Members of our faculty have been the recipient of Fox School and University teaching awards honoring their teaching excellence. Our collective teaching evaluations rank us at the very top of the Fox School. In fact, while research clearly plays an extremely important role in our department, faculty will not be hired as a member of our staff unless they are excellent in the classroom and show a willingness to work with students as well. Our Department is deeply committed to the professional development and success of all our students and we strive to foster a culture where students are welcome to interact with members of our faculty.
Our Mission Statement as a department and as a faculty is three fold: First, we are committed to producing high quality research in the areas of risk management and insurance and actuarial science, advancing the frontiers of knowledge in these disciplines. Second, we also seek to develop and deliver a current and demanding curriculum to our students. Third, we seek to provide the necessary support to develop students professionally to become valuable contributors to premier organizations in the risk, insurance and actuarial science fields.
